‘Music from another dimension’ - BBC6 MusicFor centuries, music has been used to tell stories. Yet in the present day, it could be argued that the art of storytelling through music is something many have left behind.
This is not the case for Gazel, whose masterfully woven catalogue of songs draw on the Turkish folk influences of her roots, re-created with electronic structures. Her debut album ‘Gazel’s Book of Souls’ (2019) has been described as a 'magical, joyful collection of music', and 'as if Harry Potter blew off Hogwarts to study psychology'. The release earned her extensive airplay from BBC Radio 6 and led her to open for acts at the Hammersmith Apollo, Shepherd’s Bush Empire, Liverpool Sound City and The Jazz Cafe.Notable works include her 2016 debut EP ‘Bone Key’, which earned her a nomination in the 2016 Independent Music Awards, her 2024 EP ‘Dark Earth’, a collection of Turkish folk songs with English lyrics exploring Jungian themes, and her newest release ‘Tape Session’ (2025), a live solo session recorded directly to tape as part of award-winning studio engineer Shuta Shinoda’s ‘Tape Session’ series.
